MEPA revokes Sliema permit, approves Fort Cambridge restoration

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority Board today approved for restoration work to be carried out at Fort Cambridge in Sliema.

The works which will involve the restoration of the entire underground tunnels, bastions, ditch and glacis together with the main fort structure, underground levels and roof will make certain that the fort will rediscover its original layout.

The Authority noted that the applicant had carried out extensive research to ensure that the original plans of the Fort were found and effectively used as part of the restoration method statement.

The MEPA Board also decided to revoke a planning permit for a development in Triq Parisio in Sliema. Following a complaint by third parties, the Planning Directorate carried out an internal investigation and found that mistakenly not all registered objectors had been formally informed by the Authority about the public hearing which was to decide this planning application.

The Planning Directorate, on legal advicee, found that the entire planning process was not entirely carried out in accordance to the law and so requested the Board to consider that the permit is revoked.

The Board decided that the application will be sent back to the Development Control Commission for all registered objectors to be notified and a decision in public will be taken again within the next few days.
