The next of kin of car owners who were eligible for a VAT refund on cars purchased between 2004 and 2008 will be eligble for the refund of incorrectly applied VAT.

Transport minister Joe Mizzi today said that the refund of VAT that was applied incorrectly on the CIF (cost, insurance and freight) and registration tax, will be granted on all cars purchased for personal use between 2004 and 2008.

Mizzi, who said through this scheme government was delivering on one of its electoral promises, explained that 9,800 motorists had applied for the refund, with over 7,000 already validated by Transport Malta.

The scheme applies for persons who purchased and imported a car from Europe, as well as from outside the continent.

Applicants have until 28 March to apply, with the first instalments of the refund - to be split over seven years - paid by the second week of May.
