Illegal site in Marsalforn receives a visit from MEPA

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) moved in on a site in Marsalforn, Gozo, for being illegally converted into a recreational and open storage area.

The large site, situated in the touristic area of Gozo, was operating outside the development zone (ODZ), and had been enclosed with a high boundary wall and gate around 30 metres high. The site was also housing a caravan, a boat, a makeshift structure, a BBQ area surrounded by tables and chairs.

MEPA was notified to stop works after the Gozo Courts were presented with a prohibitory injunction by the contravener’s lawyer. The clearing operation had to stop for around another two weeks until the court hears the case.

In a previous case, MEPA had also been stopped by a prohibitory injunction from continuing a direct action operation on a building known as Wied Betti in the limits of Gudja, reportedly developed in an ODZ area. However, the court later ruled that MEPA had the legal right to continue with its operation, and has given the contravener a few days to remove illegalities from the premises.
