The Siggiewi local council has objected to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority over government's proposal to build 12 cattle-rearing farms in the area known as San Niklaw, in the limits of Siggiewi.

The council said that it had consistently objected to the proposed development and as far back as July 2012, it had unanimously approved a resolution objecting to the application. “The council believes that the proposed development will have a negative impact on the location of Siggiewi,” it said in a statement issued today, citing the odour which the farms will create, as well as the “negative visual impact” the construction will leave.

“It will also have a negative impact on the Dar tal-Providenza, its residents and workers,” it said. The residence is only 800 meters away from the boundary of the site proposed for the project. “The air quality will also deteriorate due to the gas emissions which might result from the development.”

The MEPA board will be considering and making a decision on the local council’s application during a board meeting, set to be held today.
