Speaking at a press conference following a visit to Dar tal-Providenza on the occasion of the home's 50th anniversary earlier today, Muscat spoke of the importance of such charitable endeavours and their long-term value to the nation.

"Whatever our divisions in politics, our country is united in our commitment to charity," Muscat said.

"We might take it for granted, but the home took great vision when it was first conceived," he said, describing the way the home had begun to operate around 50 years ago.

During his visit, Muscat spoke to many of the residents and carers, and he was also accompanied by wife Michelle Muscat and Parliamentary secretary for the rights of those with a disability Justyne Caruana.

The home was the brainlchild of Dun Mikiel Azzopardi and the work and services it provides are invaluable to residents and their families.

Muscat said that since the opening of the home, disability rights had improved by leaps and bounds.

"The vision for the future is to be much more present on a community level and to have smaller homes," he said, adding that the government was looking forward to the opening of the first community residential home, scheduled for the coming weeks.

Muscat stressed that the home would always be needed and he looked forward to it offering more services in the future.
