In the Press: Five critically injured in charity car show tragedy

Headlines today are dominated by the tragedy that unfolded at this year’s edition of Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina.

The paper reports that a total of 26 people were injured, five of them critically, after a supercar lost control during the charity event. The event, organised in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund, turned from entertaining to terrifying, when a Porsche 918 Spyder spun out of control into a crowd of onlookers. Among the critically injured is a six-year-old girl, and her mother. A magisterial inquiry has been opened and organisers testified in court.

Siggiewi Mayor Karol Auqilina doesn’t deny that he was not supported by the nationalist party after he took a very strong position against the possibility of a sports car and motor circuit. The circuit is planned in the limits of Siggiewi. Aquilina said that he was admonished by high officials of the party for “irritating the party”, the paper adds.

PN leader Simon Busuttil speaks about the importance of a sustainable economy, just distribution of wealth and dignity for all, druing an interview on Radio 101 yesterday. Busuttil looked forward to next week’s Budget and insists that the only way the country can go forward in sustainable manner is through growth based on responsible spending, unlike what the current government is doing.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil demands that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat present the list of people granted a passport through the passport scheme tomorrow, when the monitoring committee commences. Busuttil was speaking during an interview on Radio 101, where he insisted that the government had promised to lift its veil of secrecy on the scheme on the party’s insistence.
