The General Workers Union has launched a training programme to train 140 shop stewards in dialogue and improved efficiency.

GWU secretary general Josef Bugeja said the union had set up a €7,000 project – co-funded by the EU social fund – to train its members.

"The lessons will run from Monday to Saturday, starting from next week, and it will be run by various experts," he said.

Bugeja explained that various HR managers and members from the Malta Employers Association, NCPE, OHSA and the department of industrial relations would be running the lectures.

"The lessons will be a way for shop stewards to understand how people in management positions think and make their decisions," he said, stressing that dialogue was always the key to success.

He further added that the project was part of the union's drive to create better dialogue and so have better efficiency.

"We think that this pilot project will help us to increase efficiency and interaction with our social partners," Bugeja said.

Bugeja said that the sessions would also help the union to create better policies according to the needs of those involved.
