Shadow Minister for the Economy Claudio Grech and Secretary General of the General Workers Union Josef Bugeja both agreed that the era of political tribalism is over and that the aim of the two organizations remained the same.

The two met at the GWU headquarters. The aim of the meeting, Grech explained, was to explain in detail the working document published by the Nationalist Party last week, entitled ‘An Economy for the People’.

He said that both the PN and GWU intend to fight precarious employment and support productivity and social enterprise.

Grech, accompanied by Nationalist MP Kristy Debono, said that the PN took a courageous step in addressing the integration of foreign workers in the local employment sector. The aim of this, he explained, is to have a structured process that protects employers and employees.

He explained that the PN chose to have the first meeting regarding this document with the GWU to pass on a message. “The idea of ‘us versus them’ is outdated,” Grech added, “our opinions can differ but our aim remains the same.”

On his part, Bugeja agreed that there are issues that are common to all. He insisted that a population of 400,000 cannot be split. “Ideologies should not divide us,” Bugeja said, adding that the union will be waging war against precarious employment.
