Food festivals have become quite the order of the day on our tiny island, with localities competing for the most ‘original’ event.

But now, the festival being organised in Zejtun may have gone a step too far after its so-called ‘Bacon Festival’ will include a pig race.

“This is unacceptable,” PN MP, and well-known animal lover, Mario Galea said on Facebook. “I have always supported Dar Nazareth but I will do everything in my power to ensure the race does not take place. This is animal cruelty.”

The bacon festival, to be held on July 6 at Pjazza tas-Suq in Zejtun starting at 7pm till midnight, is being held in aid of Fondazzjoni Nazareth of Zejtun.

It boasts everything bacon: bacon sticks, sausages wrapped in bacon, bacon kebabs and pizza, as well as bacon cocktails. And because it’s practically summer, why not even bacon ice creams?

The festival, which has caused quite a stir and boycotts from vegans on social media, also promises to showcase recipes featuring bacon and pork.

Profits from the event will go to Dar Nazareth, a home that provides shelter for people with special needs, who have no family or cannot live with their family whatever reason.

Organisers reassure the public that parking for the event will not pose a problem, as space will be provided in the vicinity.
