Mater Dei Hospital declares major incident and asks people not to go to emergency unless necessary after head-on collision leaves two dead and seven others injured

A head-on collision between two cars in Mġarr has left two people dead and seven injured, including children.

The accident happened at 8:30pm on Sunday night. The crash involved a Red Audi A1 and a blue Maruti 800. The dead, aged 53 and 31 were the driver and one of the passengers in the Maruti.

The Audi ended up in the ditch where the road is being widened. It was being driven by a 31-year-old from Mosta, accompanied by a one-year-old baby and an 11-year-old child, who were seriously injured. Another child, 10, was slightly injured. 

Also seriously injured were two persons, aged 77 and 12 who were in the Maruti while a 44-year-old was slightly wounded. A 29-year old from Sliema was unhurt. 

Mater Dei Hospital issued a major incident alert, asking people not to go to the emergency department unless necessary. The hospital also urged motorists to cooperate by allowing ambulances to priority on the road.

The police are investigating, and a magisterial inquiry has been opened.
