Opposition camp in Sanaa attacked by Yemeni forces
Just hours after Yemen’s president surprise return yesterday calling for peace, Yemeni forces opened fire on the main Opposition camp in Sanaa.
Witnesses and protesters speaking to Reuters said troops loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, assaulted the southern end of change Square, while hundreds fled from the camp to escape the heavy mortar fire and sniper attack which continued today.
"They (the government forces) used armoured vehicles and weapons, rifles. It was an intense fight ... My house was shaking like crazy ... There are no protesters there now, it's just armed people," the witness told journalists.
Protesters said at least three people had been killed and 25 hit by sniper fire and shelling.
"We have ... one killed in a terrible way by the mortar fire … we only have half a body," Reuters report a doctor as saying.
Yesterday’s attack, which continued on today, started only a few hours after President Saleh returned to Yemen and told his people that he want the fighting to stop.
"I return to the nation carrying the dove of peace and the olive branch," Saleh was quoted as saying by state television.
