Country music legend Dolly Parton dies aged 80

Dolly Parton, a country music legend and one of America’s most enduring cultural icons, has died aged 80.

Parton was a singer-songwriter who rose from poverty in rural Tennessee to become one of the most recognisable figures in American music. Parton’s nephew announced her death on Instagram and expressed the family's sadness at her passing.

"By [Dolly's] example, we believed anything was possible," her nephew said. "She never saw a door she couldn't open, and every door she opened made and changed history."

"God bless Dolly Parton, and God bless you all," her nephew concluded. "She will always love you."

Parton had suffered a series of health problems in the months leading up to her death, prompting the cancellation of several public appearances. Most recently, she missed an appearance at Dollywood, her theme park in Tennessee, after her doctor advised her not to travel due to dehydration and dizziness.

Days before her death, Parton acknowledged that she had been going through “hard times” with her health, but insisted she remained determined to continue working.

Her cause of death has yet to be announced.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Parton wrote some of country music’s best-known songs, including Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You. She sold more than 100 million records worldwide and later expanded her career into pop music, film, philanthropy, and business.
