Al-Qaeda media chief, six militants killed in Yemeni air strike

Yemen’s al-Qaeda chief Ibrahim al-Banna and six other militants were killed in an air strike in southern Yemen, officials report.

Yemen’s Defense ministry confirmed the news and said the attack was carried out last night in the southern eastern province of Shabwa.

Conflicting reports are emerging about who carried out the attacks, with some reports pointing fingers towards US drones, others said it Yemeni planes.

The Associated Press however reports unnamed security officials who said the air strike was among five that targeted al-Qaeda positions in Shabwa and claimed US aircraft carried them out.

The attack follows the dead of the same group’s leader, Anwar al-Awlaki last month. He was killed with US drones.
