Latvia leave it late to defeat Malta

The Malta rugby national team yesterday were defeated for the second time in a row in the FIRA/AER Division 2A qualifiers by Latvia 33-26 at the Hibs Stadium. 

The Maltese team had a comfortable lead throughout the first half. Matthew Camilleri scored Malta’s first try with the help of Robert Holloway and James O’Brian. O’Brian scored as well to give Malta a 7-0 lead.

On the 17thminute the lead was stretched to 14-0. Latvia could not get into the match and it was not long before Malta had a 19 point lead.

Latvia started their comeback when Kristaps Berzins managed to make it 19-6.

In the second half Latvia started off stronger and managed to tie up the match 19-19.

Malta responded immediately and it was 26-19 in their favour.

Near the end of the match, the Malta team’s players suffered some injuries and Latvia took advantage of this situation. And the match ended 33-26.
