Spain are world football champions

Spain are world football champions for the second time in their history after beating Argentina in extra time of the World Cup final on Sunday.

After a goalless 90 minutes at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, it was Ferran Torres, who pummelled the ball into the Argentine net in the second period of extra time.

In one of the most one-sided finals ever, Spain dominated proceedings. But despite being the most threatening team on the pitch, Spain was denied repeatedly by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who stopped everything thrown his way.

Nonetheless, Martinez could do nothing in the 106th minute, when Nico Williams headed the ball down to his colleague Torres, who from close range powered in a shot that sent Spanish supporters into delirium.

A last-gasp rally by 10-men Argentina, who were attempting to win the World Cup for the second consecutive time, was not enough as Spain held on to the slim lead.

Before Sunday, Spain won the World Cup for the first and only time in 2010, when it was held in South Africa.
