New exhibition by Carm Borg launches at Gemelli Gallery
Artist Carm Borg presents a new body of work of over 30 paintings exploring the space between abstraction and figuration
At Gemelli Gallery in Ta’ Qali, Malta, Carm Borg presents a new body of work comprising over thirty paintings, tracing a nuanced movement between abstraction and figuration.
Titled States of Being, the exhibition was launched on 10 April 2026, bringing together a body of works that explored shifting emotional and psychological conditions, some featuring introspective and contemplative paintings, whilst others were more symbolic and open-ended.
The collection comprises oils or acrylics on panel. These works feature Borg’s painterly sensibility, marked by a confident use of colour and animated compositions. Within these works, form is not fixed but continuously transformed, emerging and dissolving across the surface. The interplay between abstraction and figuration unfolds as a fluid gamut of visuals, allowing the artist to move freely between creative suggestion and expression.
Figures and portraits occasionally surface within these paintings, at times directly engaging the viewer, at others turned inward, lost in introspection, their gaze drifting across the background or tracing the movement of colour and gesture. Other paintings represent states of expression manifested through abstract compositions. This variability lends the exhibition a sense of transition, as though each painting captures a moment in flux or a temporary state of being. Borg’s handling of paint, both intuitive and deliberate, reinforces this tension, balancing immediacy with compositional control.
Colour plays a central role throughout the exhibition, functioning not only as a formal element but as a carrier of expression. It structures space, evokes mood, and intensifies the psychological dimension of the works. Surfaces shift between density and openness, encouraging a sustained engagement that reveals subtle relationships between layers, marks, and forms.
States of Being provides a window into Carm Borg’s current practice, placing his work within a dialogue where painterly expression moves fluidly between abstraction and representation in their varied states of being. The exhibition highlights an interplay of dynamic colours and spirited visual composition. In doing so, it reasserts painting as a space where human experiences and states of being can be both articulated and felt through visual imagery.
The exhibition will run until the 27 April at Gemelli Gallery, Ta’ Qali, Malta. Opening hours are from 9am to 2pm
