Jamming for change at Upper Barrakka

A concert of world music by Maltese and African musicians will be held on today at the Upper Barraka Garden to mark this year’s World Refugee Day.

This has become a popular annual activity, and this year, for the second time, it is being organised by youth NGO GetUpStandUp! in collaboration with OFD (Organisation for Friendship in Diversity), MSM (Migrant Solidarity Movement) and UNHCR.

The event, called Jamming for Change, is part of a series of activities being held to raise awareness about the human rights of refugees on World Refugee Day.

“This is not only an opportunity to see integration in practice but also a chance to remember the human beings who demonstrate how important the protection of human rights is to us all,” Yasmin Degiorgio, GetUpStandUp president said.

The concert will feature reggae acts Irie Flow and Jah Bazz, world music from Macugave Troup and Mohammed Deeq, the unique sounds of Clare and Mohamed, as well as Ahseyone Raggamuffin.

The event starts with the Children’s activities at 15:00, with the music concert starting at 17:00.

A ‘living Library’, coordinated by MSM, will give visitors a chance to learn about the lives and experiences of different people.

African food stands and a traditional cultural market featuring embroidery, weaving, fabrics, henna, hair braiding and more, will be coordinated by UNHCR, which is also organising a fashion show of women’s traditional and modern fashions during the event.

UNHCR will also be responsible for the projection of a photo exhibition on Fort St Angelo starting from 19:30.
