My essentials: Joanne Camilleri’s cultural picks

I am a classical musician—a pianist and harpsichordist, who performs regularly both locally and internationally in a variety of settings, as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, and with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Alongside my performing career, I also share my love and passion for music with my students.

Book

Body of Evidence by Patricia Cornwell. I enjoy reading forensic crime stories, and this is a particularly compelling example of the genre. The series is exceptionally well written, with meticulous attention to forensic detail. Beyond the suspense and intrigue of a well-crafted story, Cornwell also explores the psychological toll that such cases can have on those who dedicate themselves to pursuing justice. I thoroughly enjoy the many layers of her writing, from the forensic intricacies and gripping plot to the complex emotional and psychological dimensions of the characters.

Film

Dead Poets Society. It explores how an inspiring teacher, John Keating, encourages his students to challenge convention, think independently, and discover their own voices. Through his genuine connection with them, he builds their confidence and belief in themselves. The film also highlights loyalty and friendship, showing how the students support one another while confronting fear, pressure, and expectations imposed by society and their families. A highly recommended film.

Internet and TV

I don’t watch television; my main source of information is the internet, where I follow news headlines and keep up with events that interest me. At present, there is understandably considerable attention surrounding the Daphne Caruana Galizia case, which I have been following quite closely, as I imagine many in Malta have. I am deeply grateful to the journalists who work tirelessly to report the news and investigate stories—without their work, many of us would have little insight into what is happening in our society.

Music

I listen to many different classical composers, whether during preparation for my performances and students’ programmes or simply to alleviate the boredom of being stuck in traffic. Each composer has a unique story, and every piece carries its own magic. Some favourites include Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto and Bach’s Partita No. 5, although there are many more. For me, music is about bringing these stories to life and sharing them with others. I also enjoy listening to Libera, whose music brings me peace.

Place

In winter, walking through the countryside, where open fields outweigh residences, cranes, cars, and people, to escape from the noise and density of everyday life. I love places like Mtaħleb, surrounded by wide, open landscapes and the quiet rhythm of nature.
