The Persephone Myth in Literature

While scholars began to focus on the Eleusinian Mysteries of Demeter and Persephone, poets and novelists explored the divisions between mother and daughter occasioned by patriarchal marriage. Prof. Vassallo will examine the appropriation of this Greek fertility myth by some of the major literary authors over the centuries. Reference will be made to Homer, Dante, Milton, Dante Gabriel Rossetti , Swinburne, D.H. Lawrence and modernist literature. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
