3,500 households are expected to benefit from a further €8 million the government has decided to use to extend the Photo Voltaic grant scheme for families.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Konrad Mizzi, who was addressing a press conference with parliamentary secretary Ian Borg, said that the government remains committed to making clean energy available for as many families as possible.

"Over the past four years, this government has already invested €33 million in clean energy schemes," he said. "Having successfully switched to gas from heavy fuel oil, we will now launch a big push on renewable energy.”

Mizzi said that the government's energy policy had always been based on low tariffs, low emissions and security of supply.

“We have managed to reduce tariffs by €89 million over four years and reduced carbon emission by 1.1 million tonnes, but we cannot afford to become complacent,” he said. “17,000 families have already benefited from the various schemes the government has introduced in the energy sector.”
