Civil protection battling Mqabba industrial fire

Residents in Mqabba and Żurrieq advised to keep all doors and windows closed as a precaution because of smoke and fumes in the area

The Civil Protection Malta is currently responding to an industrial fire at Tar-Robba Recycling Centre in Mqabba, with dark black fumes visible from a distance across the South of Malta.

Formerly a quarry, the recycling centre also has a number of scrapped cars on site.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area due to safety concerns and ongoing emergency response operations.

Residents in nearby localities, including Mqabba and Żurrieq, have been advised to keep all doors and windows closed as a precaution because of smoke and fumes in the area.

Further updates will be issued through official channels, with authorities urging the public to follow instructions from emergency services and local officials.

A spokesperson for the Malta International Airport said flights have so far not been affected, and operations will continue as scheduled.

The accident marks the third major scrapfire in the last six months.

Last March, an industrial fire broke out at a quarry on the outskirts of Dingli containing tyres, asbestos and other hazardous materials.

Before that, an industrial fire broke out in a garage complex in Valley Road, Birkirkara last February.
