A 26-year-old man from Bormla has been remanded in custody after being charged with domestic violence offences and allegedly breaching conditions imposed in a separate pending court case.

Josef Grech appeared before the court on Tuesday, where he denied all charges brought against him.

The case stems from a report made by a British national regarding a disturbance at a residence in Marsaskala. Police officers who responded to the call were informed that the accused had allegedly grabbed his partner by the neck, prompting neighbours to seek assistance.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed that Grech had visible blood on his face. The woman initially told police that she did not wish to file a report and denied having been assaulted.

However, during subsequent discussions with officers from the police’s Domestic Violence Unit (DVU), she allegedly stated that an argument between the couple had escalated into physical violence and damage to property.

Following his arrest, Grech complained of feeling unwell and was taken to a health centre for medical attention. After being discharged, he was questioned by police before being arraigned in court.

The case was heard before Magistrate Ingrid Bianco, who rejected a request for bail.

The prosecution was led by Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Chantelle Mifsud.
