Man charged with beating former partner

A man charged with causing grievous bodily harm on his former partner during an argument, was granted bail this afternoon.

Ivan Mula, 32 of Zejtun was granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €4,500 after pleading not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to his former partner.

Mula, who works as a salesman for a lighting company, was accused of breaking his former partner's nose, and of beating her up during an argument.

He was also charged with causing €1,600 in damages to her property, while also stealing her chequebook in the wake of the argument.

When granting bail, Magistrate Carol Peralta warned Mula that he must not approach his former partner, or be in Fgura or Tarxien.

"Should you be found stalking the woman, I will make sure that you are immediately arrested and sent straight to jail," Peralta told the accused.

Lawyer Mark Anthony Cutajar appeared for Mula as legal aide, while lawyers Lucio and Noella Sciriha appeared parte civile for the victim.

The victim's lawyers stressed with the court that Mula needed therapy and that their client was not at all "seeking a pound of flesh" from the accused.

They lamented that their client had suffered for a long time at the hands of the accused, and had also threatened her family.
