Retired soldier charged with rape

A 59 year-old retired soldier was remanded in custody this afternoon, after being charged with rape and corruption of a minor.

Magistrate Edwina Grima this afternoon remanded in custody a 59 year-old retired soldier from Marsascala, after he was charged with raping and corrupting his former partner's daughter.

Prosecuting Inspector Louise Calleja said that the victim was subjected to rape over the past years, and it was only now that the victim spoke out about her ordeal at the hands of the accused.

Calleja objected to the accused request for bail, insisting that the victim was too scared of him.

Magistrate Grima, who ordered a ban on the name of the accused, denied lawyer Charmaine Cherriet's request for bail.

The lawyer argued that her client was "of good character" and "trustworthy" and asked for strict bail conditions.

How can a persistent rapist who raped his victim over a number of years be of good character and how can he be trustworthy when he raped his partner's daughter. These people, when found guilty should be locked away for life. After all his victim has been scarred for life.
