Power tool thief jailed for a year

The court also placed the accused under a treatment order for him to follow a drug rehabilitation programme whilst in prison

A drug addict of Libyan extraction has been jailed for year and ordered to follow a drug rehabilitation programme after he admitted to the theft of a power tool from a parked car in Valletta . 

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja heard 35- year old Libyan national Kaled Mohamed Ben Gamhur, now resident in Valletta, admit to stealing a chaser from a parked car last Wednesday morning. The court heard how he was apprehended in the act and that the equipment had been returned to its rightful owner. 

The court, taking into consideration his early admission as well as the fact that he was a recidivist, sentenced him to one year imprisonment. In addition it placed Ben Gamhur under a nine-month treatment order for him to follow a drug rehabilitation programme whilst in prison.

Police Inspector Carlos Cordina prosecuted. Lawyer Christopher Chircop appeared for Ben Gamhur.
