Labour MEP Daniel Attard has been recognised as the best MEP in the field of Sustainable Tourism at the MEP Awards ceremony held on Tuesday.

The MEP Awards recognise the work of the best Members of the European Parliament across different areas of political work.

Over the past year, Attard was entrusted with leading the European Parliament's work on the future of tourism in Europe.

Attard's report gained strong support from the European Parliament and will form the basis of the first European Strategy for Sustainable Tourism.

The award for best MEP in this field was presented to Daniel Attard by European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica.

Also nominated in the same category were Croatian MEP and former Tourism Minister Nikolina Brnjac, as well as the Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Tourism, Elissavet Vozemberg-Vrionidi.

In a speech on the occasion, Daniel Attard said the award held special meaning for him.

The Labour MEP recalled that "a year ago, during this very same evening, I was going through one of the most difficult moments in my public life. Today, this is a moment of satisfaction that reminds me that difficult times pass, and that the truth always wins."
