Scrapped plans for high rise tower in Tigne welcomed by NGO

Din l-Art Helwa welcomes scrapping of plans for Tigne Point high rise tower and says applications for high rise development should not be considered until government policy created.

Din l-Art Helwa said they welcomed the news that plans for the high rise tower at Tigne Point have been scrapped by Midi.

“As the long awaited policy on high rise development still has not been made known by government, the several applications pending for tower blocks should not be considered until such a policy has been published,” the NGO said.

Following an article in the Times revealing that the application for the multimillion project had been withdrawn following objections by Sliema residents and formally registered objections.

“The decision that the tower is to be replaced by landscaping is most welcome not just because it brings a slight reprieve to the oppressive visual environment and disturbance to Sliema’s residents already caused by the massively dense developments at Tigne Point but also because of the greater damage it was going to reap on the integrity of Valletta’s world heritage skyline,” the NGO said.

Din l-Art Helwa also said they hoped the decision was final irrespective of the reason behind the reversal of the plan.
