Liquigas hits out at authorities over enforcement of consumer safety directives

Liquigas hits out at resources authority and questions its vigilance over non-serialised LPG cylinders sold to consumers.

Liquigas has called on authorities to ensure all LPG cylinders without serial numbers are destroyed.

In a statement, Liquigas insisted that authorities must enforce European safety directives for the benefit of consumers, and warned of their duty to ensure LPG cylinders on the market are safe through serial numbers, to trace each cylinder to its original manufacturing certification.

The company said that any cylinder without a serial number, is as good as “scrap metal” and assured consumers that all of its cylinders are clearly serialised in numbers and covered by insurance.

Liquigas explained that the EU’s Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive and the ADR Directive regarding the carriage of dangerous goods, are there to ensure traceability and safety of gas cylinders placed on the market.

“These directives stipulate that a cylinder without a serial number can neither be tested, nor filled, nor sold. It is only good as scrap metal. Why would anyone go against such EU Directives that have the specific purpose of protecting and safeguarding the citizen?” Liquigas asked.

It pointed out however, that without a serial number, no authority can check or verify whether a cylinder was manufactured and maintained up to required standards.

If Liquigas is truly concerend with consumer safety and the criteria of the ADR directive regarding the safe carriage of dangerous goods then it would advise its customers that they cannot legally carry gas cylinders in their own private vehicles to/from their point-of-sale outlets and that by doing so consumers break the law and invalidate their own private vehicle insurance policy.

Cut the crap. This has nothing to do with consumer safety.
