Construction worker injured in Żurrieq roof collapse, inquiry launched

Authorities are investigating an injury sustained by a worker after a ceiling collapsed during demolition works in Żurrieq on Wednesday

A 59-year-old construction worker from Ħaż-Żabbar was injured on Wednesday after the roof of a site he was working at collapsed during demolition works.

The police said the incident happened at around 10:45am in Qrendi Road, Żurrieq. Preliminary investigations showed he was working on the roof of the building with small machinery when the collapse happened.

He was transferred to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was certified for his injuries.

Duty magistrate Franco Agius has launched an inquiry, and has instructed experts to assist him. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) are assisting in the inquiry.

Both authorities were immediately on site and launched parallel investigations alongside the magisterial inquiry.

The BCA and OHSA said they have taken the necessary measures in relation to the case, including the immediate suspension of works pending the completion of the required investigations.
