MDA appoints Pierre Galea as acting secretary general

The Malta Development Association (MDA) announced Pierre Galea has been approved to serve as acting secretary general of the association, following the resignation of Paul Attard.

Galea will serve in the role of Acting Secretary General until the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is scheduled to take place on the 21 May 2026.

Previously occupying the role of assistant secretary general, Galea is one of the founding members of the MDA, serving as their first Secretary General upon its establishment in 2010.

On Thursday, the MDA was hit by resignations from three top-level officials.

Anton Camilleri, Pio Vassallo, and former MDA Secretary-general Paul Attard resigned after a suspected disagreement on an MDA decision to submit a formal complaint to the European Commission's State Aid Directorate.

The complaint asked the commission to investigate the affordable housing scheme announced last year over “potential unlawful state aid,” claiming the scheme grants “selective advantages” within the development and property sector.

Industry sources close to the situation informed MaltaToday that Camilleri and Vassallo were among the bidders for the affordable housing projects and were annoyed by the MDA’s request for a Brussels investigation.
