Easter Sunday processions draw thousands across Malta

Thousands of people lined the streets of several Maltese towns and villages on Sunday to watch men run with the statue of the Risen Christ as part of the traditional Easter processions held across the island, with many coming out to enjoy the sunny weather and the joy that the feast of the Resurrection brings.

In Cospicua, crowds took to the streets to mark the occasion, taking part in a tradition found across several Maltese villages, the run with the statue of the Risen Christ.

Children held up their Easter eggs and figolli along the route to be blessed by the parish priest, as communities came together to mark the resurrection of Christ, the most significant occasion in the Catholic calendar.

The celebrations came after a difficult Good Friday, when processions across the island were called off due to severe winds and isolated showers. A yellow weather warning for strong winds and unstable conditions led parishes to cancel many of these events just hours before they were due to begin.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna celebrated mass at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta.

Easter marks the end of the Lenten period, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus three days after his crucifixion. In some communities, the occasion is observed with an all-night mass representing a vigil for Christ's resurrection.

Families gathered for Easter lunch at home or in restaurants to eat and drink together in celebration.
