Government announces updated Get Qualified scheme supporting STEM growth

An updated version of the Get Qualified scheme granting students up to 70% in tax credits was announced on Monday.

The Get Qualified scheme pays back up to 70% of fees for courses that lead to a certification, diploma, degree, or post-graduate qualification. Students benefit from the tax credit upon completion of the course, and may use these credits over a period of 15 years.

Under the updated scheme, which will remain in effect until 2030, an additional fiscal bonus will be introduced for qualifications in STEM fields, and support will be extended to individuals completing doctoral-level studies.

“Through the Get Qualified scheme, we are providing workers with an opportunity to invest in themselves, while benefiting from up to 70% reimbursement in tax credits on their study expenses,” said Minister for Enterprise Silvio Schembri.

It will also introduce several improvements on the scheme, now benefitting from a fairer system based on ECTS or learning hours.

The new measures aim to better reflect Malta’s current labour market realities and industry needs by working beside national economic priorities and promoting industry-relevant studies.

An attainment bonus has also been introduced for individuals who complete a relevant qualification in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
