The government has officially launched the AI for Everyone project, a national  online literacy course on Artificial Intelligence aiming to equip the public with a comprehensive understanding of AI.

All citizens and residents in Malta aged 14 and over will have free access to the course, which can be accessed at ai4all.gov.mt using their e-ID from a mobile phone, tablet, or computer.

Developed by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) in partnership with the University of Malta, the self-paced course is offered in both Maltese and English, strategically designed to accommodate individuals of all demographics and professional backgrounds, requiring no prerequisite technical expertise.

The course introduces foundational AI concepts in an accessible manner with a focus on the practical application of AI to drive productivity, enhance continuous learning, and foster innovation in daily life.

Once users complete the foundational modules, they may choose to pursue specialized, industry-specific tracks aligned with their career trajectories, ultimately receiving an official certificate upon completion.

The initiative was launched in an international partnership with OpenAI and Microsoft, allowing individuals who complete the approximately two-hour course to receive a free one-year subscription to either ChatGPT Plus or Microsoft 365 Personal Copilot.

The commitment was underscored in the latest Budget, which announced a €100 million investment for digitalisation and the adoption of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Virtual Reality, Blockchain, and Robotics in Malta.

“With this initiative, we are sending a clear message that in our country, we do not want anyone to be left behind,” Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg said. “AI is changing everything we do, and therefore we are not only making this technology available to everyone, but we are also helping ensure that everyone has the opportunity to understand how to use it.”

"By pairing this education with free access to advanced digital tools like ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft 365 Personal Copilot, we are transforming a concept that may not be very familiar into a practical, everyday aid for our families, students, and workers,” Minister for Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said.

“With this partnership, Malta is leading Europe and the world in bringing AI to all its citizens,” Head of OpenAI for Countries George Osborne said. “Intelligence is becoming a national utility and all governments have an important role to play in making sure their populations have both the access and the skills to make the most of AI. Where Malta leads, I hope others will follow.”

“Today Malta is sending a powerful message about the AI era: access and opportunity should belong to everyone. In the AI economy, the most important infrastructure is not just data centres, it is human capability. Malta is investing in that on a national scale,”Tilenachos Moraitis from Microsoft concluded.
