The Environmental Health Directorate has advised the public against bathing in a section of sea at Birżebbuġa after sewage contamination was detected in the water.

The directorate said the recommendation was being made as a precaution following the percolation of sewage into the sea, which could affect water quality and pose a risk to bathers' health.

Environmental Health Officers identified the source of the contamination as private residences in Triq it-Tankijiet, Birżebbuġa.

The directorate said an abatement notice had been issued to the property owner responsible, while legal proceedings have also been initiated.

Authorities have not indicated how long the contamination is expected to persist, saying it is not yet possible to predict the duration of the incident.

The Environmental Health Directorate said it will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available
