Momentum welcomes constitutional protection against disability discrimination
Momentum views the proposal as as an example of how ideas put forward by smaller political parties can influence the national agenda
Momentum has welcomed government's announcement that it will amend the Constitution to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability.
The party said the proposal would strengthen constitutional protections for people with disabilities by adding disability to the list of grounds protected from discrimination.
Momentum said the amendment would reinforce the rights of such people and send a message that discrimination has no place in Maltese society.
The party also said it viewed the proposal as an example of how ideas put forward by smaller political parties can influence the national agenda. Momentum noted that the measure formed part of its electoral programme and welcomed its introduction.
"We are pleased that a proposal we championed is now being considered as the first bill of the new parliamentary term," Momentum executive member Matthew Agius said. "There is more that needs to be done against cases of discrimination. For example, we propose that a person should not be discriminated against because of their age."
The party said it remains committed to proposing reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and improving equality, regardless of the size of the political party advancing them.
