More than 3,100 new residences approved between April and June

The National Statistics Office says apartment buildings ammounted to 72.1% of newly approved residences

A total of 539 building permits for a total of 3,126 new residences were approved during the second quarter of 2026, according to a recent report issued by National Statistics Office (NSO).

This marks an increase of 3.3% when compared to the same period last year.

Penthouses made up 14.8% of new dwellings, followed by maisonettes at 9.4%. Terraced houses accounted for 3% of the total.

Other residential units, including bungalows, farmhouses and villas, made up the smallest share, at 0.7% of approved dwellings.

The highest number of building permits was approved in St Paul’s Bay, followed closely by Birkirkara, with Msida, Safi and Mosta next on the list.

No permits were issued in Floriana, Imdina, Santa Luċija, or Valletta.

The number of approved residential developments increased by 4.6% in Malta, while it decreased by 5.1% in Gozo and Comino.
