Former justice minister and PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis has been appointed as Commissioner of Laws, the Justice Ministry has announced.

Zammit Lewis was a PL MP earlier this year before the end of the last legislature. He had announced his intention not to contest this year's general election, describing politics as “a challenging mission” that requires constant energy and commitment, not only from those directly involved but also from their families.

In a statement on Friday, the ministry also announced Judge Emeritus Antonio Mizzi was made chairperson of the commission.

The Commission was appointed by the President of Malta, acting on the advice of Cabinet, in accordance with Article 23A of the Administrative Justice Act. The appointments came into effect on 9 October 2026.

The other members of the commission are Dr Joseph M. Buttigieg, Ms Christine Schembri, Mr David Matrenza and Dr Tonio Portughese.

Commenting on the appointments, Justice Minister Clifton Grima said they form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional structures within the justice sector.

“We will continue working to ensure that our institutions have the structures and personnel necessary to carry out their functions effectively, responsibly and in the best interests of the administration of justice. I wish all those appointed to these roles every success in their work,” the minister said.

The ministry also extended its best wishes to the members of the Commission and to Zammit Lewis as they undertake their respective responsibilities.
