Edward Zammit Lewis will not be contesting general election
Former Labour MP and minister Edward Zammit Lewis calls it a day on his parliamentary career
Former Labour MP and minister Edward Zammit Lewis will not be contesting the general election, he confirmed in a statement to MaltaToday.
Zammit Lewis described politics as “a challenging mission” that requires constant energy and commitment, not only from those directly involved but also from their families. He said the role also brings “great satisfaction,” particularly when helping people and contributing to meaningful reforms.
He traced his political journey back nearly 30 years, when he served as president of Forum Żgħażagħ Laburisti, later becoming a local councillor while still a law student at the University of Malta. Over the years, he said he served at every level of politics, including during difficult periods for the Labour Party.
Referring to the years before 2013, Zammit Lewis said he played a role, alongside others under the leadership of Joseph Muscat, in helping transform the party into “a credible and electable force.”
Since 2013, he has served as a Member of Parliament representing the 8th Electoral District, and held roles as parliamentary secretary and later minister for nearly nine years.
“Following careful reflection with my family, I have taken the difficult decision not to contest the upcoming general election and to take a step back from front-line politics, while focusing more on my legal profession,” he said.
He stressed that his decision does not lessen his commitment to the Labour Party, adding he will continue to support Prime Minister Robert Abela in the upcoming election.
Zammit Lewis also issued an apology for any shortcomings during his time in office and thanked those who supported him throughout his political career.
