Pole still in critical condition after plunging in the sea

Because of documents found in the car, the Police said that the victim was 29-year old from Hungary. As a matter of fact the car is registered to Ferenc Varga who at the time of the accident was not in Malta.

Daniel Arthur Sobczak, 20 from Poland and residing in St Julians was identified as the person who plunged into the sea early last Saturday morning in Imsida. He was identified by people close to the Hungarian who told investigators that Ferenc Varga, the owner of the car and the person initially identified as being the driver, was abroad and he lent his car to Sobczak.

The accident happened just before 4am when Sobczak was driving an Opel Astra towards Msida Church, lost control of the car, hit a Honda Jazz that was parked there, and swerved on the left with the car plunging into the water and ending upside down with the driver still inside

The first to jump in the muddy waters was PC840 Roderick Psaila together with another man who was in a coffee shop at the time of the accident. They both confirmed that there was a person trapped in the car which ended upside down. But because it was still dark and had nothing to force open the doors or windows of the car, both men couldn’t do much. But just in time members of the Civil Protection arrived and ARO David Cassar jumped too in the sea and managed to free Sobczak.

When the Pole was brought to shore he was immediately taken to hospital where he was certified to be in critical condition and in danger of dying. He is still in under observation in the ITU in Mater Dei.
