An eight-year-old girl from Iklin is in serious condition and being treated at Mater Dei Hospital when she was in the family car which was involved in a traffic accident with a police car from the Rapid Intervention Unit.

The accident happened just before 5.30pm in Triq iż-Żejfa in Mosta. Jesmond Galea, 35 from Iklin, was driving a Toyota Corolla towards Targa Gap when he made a right turn into Triq Patri Ġużé Delia. At the same time the RIU unit with three constables was coming from the opposite direction with their beacon lights, on their way to another case.

As Galea was turning and was almost in Triq Patri Ġużé Delia, his Toyota was hit by the police car in the back on the right hand side. With the impact the Toyota was pushed on a traffic island whilst the RIU car ended right in the middle of the road.

Besides Galea and his child, in the same car was his wife, 37, and two other children, a boy 13 and a girl, 7. Mother and children were taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance and so were the three constables. Only the eight-year-old suffered serious injuries. The rest of the family and the policemen suffered only slight injuries while the father was unhurt.

Other units from the RIU and the District Police were on site. Police Sergeants  Dennis Camilleri and Chris Xuereb together with Police Constable Charló Xuereb from the Mosta Police Station handled the report while Inspector Edmond Cuschieri is investigating the accident.

Magistrate on duty, Dr Franco Depasquale was duly informed and he ordered an inquiry and he appointed Forensic Specialist Dr Mario Scerri and Legal Procurator Mario Buttigieg as court experts together with the Police photographers.
