The Valletta Waterfront’s main parking space will remain closed until the end of this year, Illum newspaper reports.

The car park, situated at just a five-minute walk away from bars and restaurants, was closed a couple of weeks ago.

Owners and employers of leading outlets at the Waterfront told Illum that the parking problem hit its peak during weekends and special occasions.

By way of an example, restaurants reported cancellation of bookings on Mother's Day while other customers were forced to park at the Floriana park and ride.

Illum is informed that the closure of the parking was due to restructuring works on the existing deep-water quay.

A spokesperson for the transport ministry admitted that this has created an inconvenience for drivers but said the closure of the parking space was only temporary.

“The project is divided into several phases. In order to reduce the inconvenience, Transport Malta will be opening the car park gradually according to the work phases. When the project will be completed, the parking area will be closed once again in order to have a new surface, and will become fully operational by the end of the year,” the spokesperson said.
