Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said that he hopes that in the near future, the Government would be able to announce news regarding the future of Air Malta.

He explained that, right now, he cannot give details about the negotiations underway because of their commercial sensitivity. “But once there are some new developments on the matter, we will come and present it to the public in the most transparent way possible,” he added.

Questioned by MaltaToday about the possibility of a strategic alliance, Zammit Lewis said he hopes to be able to have discussions on what the government would have acquired. He insisted that the “airline industry is a very competitive one, and it’s not an easy task. But we will come forward if any developments arise and the Government is ready to make all the necessary discussions in various fora,” he added.

The Minister explained that, although it’s an independent entity, the National Airline is a very important partner for the Government.

Speaking during a political activity in Saint Paul’s Bay yesterday, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that the government would do all that was necessary to ensure the sustainability of the company. He pledged his determination to strengthen the company and make it a driving force of the local economy once again.
