Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and foreign minister George Vella visited the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, where some 89,000 people from Syria have found shelter.

The camp is being run by the Jordanian government with assistance from the World Food Programme and UN agencies.

Muscat spoke to administrators and refugees as he toured the camp, which includes a school and a hospital.

The prime minister said the refugee crisis at the borders of the Syrian civil war strengthened calls for the international community to work towards a resolution of the crisis in Syria as quickly as possible. He said Malta would call on the EU to assist border countries such as Jordan and Lebanon as they sheltered thousands of refugees.
