The Democratic Party (PD) has noted what it described as the continued lack of enforcement on illegal dumping.

“Illegal dumping in Ta Qali has been halted, and now it has simply shifted to other locations, to the determinant of our already strained environment,” party leader Godfrey Farrugia said in a statement.

“A site on the coast near Siggiewi has been transformed into one of the latest targets, and irreparable damage to flora and fauna has been done.”

The PD said it was asking the police, “yet again”, when they will start taking action and enforce existing legislation.

“Partit Demokratiku also notes that the laws being broken include the damage being done to protected plants and natural features, and the consequences must be seen holistically,” continued the statement.

The PD said it believed Malta’s waste management problem was being allowed to worsen in order to justify land reclamation in the interests of developers, rather than look for genuine solutions to a growing crisis.
