The first chance on goal came for Austria after 5 minutes. Sabitzer pulled wide and delivered a cross that caught the defence flat footed. Harnik attacked it from point-blank range, without a defender in sight, but he planted it wide.

Portugal responded on the 12th minute when Nani found space down the left and fired a shot that produced a good save by the Austrian goalkeeper. Moments later, the keeper was vital again in denying Vieirinha.

Fernando Santos’s men were close again on the 19th minute after they cracked open Austria's right flank with an excellent move that saw Guerreiro run to the byline. His low ball into the box seemed set to be buried, but Ronaldo slotted it wide.

After 31 minutes, Portugal had another chance when from a corner, Nani headed towards goal. The ball hit off the woodwork, and from the rebound, Moutinho fired a shot that went high.

A minute later, Ronaldo was unlucky after he pummeled a header on goal that forced a great save from Almer before the assistant referee signalled for an offside. However, replays suggested that he was level when Nani's cross came in.

Austria produced the first opportunity of the second half on the 48th minute as a powerful shot from Ilsankor produced a good save from Patricio.

Few minutes later, Ronaldo was denied twice after he cut in from the right flank and hammered a punishing effort on target, but Almer managed to get hands to the ball and pushed it away. From the resulting corner, the Austrian goalkeeper denied Ronaldo again by neutralising his header.

On the 78th minute, the Portuguese were awarded a penalty when Guerreiro sliced in a cross from the left-hand side, and Hinteregger brought down Ronaldo. From the resulting penalty, Ronaldo hit the post and the opportunity was lost.

This was definitely not Ronaldo’s night as 6 minutes later, the Real Madrid star had a goal disallowed. Ronaldo thought that he had converted off a free-kick, but replays showed that he was well offside. The officials were right to chalk it off with the match ending in a 0-0 draw.

Following this result, Hungary are top of group F with 4 points, while Portugal and Iceland have 2 points each. Austria sits at the bottom of the group with 1 point.
