Alex Vella, a mainstay of the football and waterpolo beat, passed away last night, at age 75.

The veteran journalist worked for 30 years as a correspondent for the Times of Malta, covering waterpolo and swimming events, as well as Premier League football matches.

Vella then left the daily newspaper to form part of the Malta Football Association as a media officer, contributing to the association’s publications.

He also contributed to Radio 101, reporting Waterpolo events.

The Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sport yesterday issued a statement paying tribute to Vella’s work in local sports journalism, saying that he would be fondly remembered for his excellent writing skills and professionalism.

Vella’s funeral will be held on Thursday at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in St Julians at 2pm.
