MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL – FINAL WEEK

JULY 18

Around the World with Kronos

The renowned Kronos Quartet –widely known for providing the soundtrack to Requiem for a Dream – will be performing at Argotti Gardens, Floriana at 21:00. Kronos have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize and the Polar Music Prize, two of music’s most prestigious awards. No other ensemble or individual artist has ever received both awards before. Entrance is at €20, with €15 concessions.

Stomping La Luna

Austrian dance company Das Collectif will be performing at MITP Theatre, St Christopher’s Street, Valletta at 21:00. Entrance is free.

JULY 20, 21

Hamlet

A production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy by the Globe Theatre at Argotti Gardens, Floriana at 21:00. Cast includes Jade Anouka, Simon Armstrong, John Bett, Amanda Hadingue, Tom Lawrence, Joshua McGuire, Ian Midlane and Alex Warren. Directed by Dominic Dromgoole. Entrance is at €20 with €15 concessions.

JULY 23

Last Night

Closing night of the Malta Arts Festival featuring Malta Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by world renowned Wayne Marshall at the Mediterranean Conference Centre at 21:00. With soloists David Allsopp, Kevin Short, Maureen Brathwaite. Programme includes Maurice Ravel, Bolero and Carl Orff, Carmina Burana Entrance is at €25, €20 with €15 concessions.

Gianpula Fridays

17 nights of partying (starting from May 27) featuring DJs Pierre Cordina, Tony Tony, Clayton J, JJoy, Ruby, Joseph Armani, Toby, MyKill and Carl Bee at the Main Room and Groove Gardens of Gianpula, limits of Rabat from 23:00 till 04:00. Entrance is at €6.

Bridge Bar Jazz Nights

Live jazz every Friday night at Bridge Bar, by Victoria Gate, Valletta from 21:00. Line up of locally established jazz musicians includes Marc Galea, Lawrie Simpson, Walter Vella, Effie Azzopardi and Eric Santucci. The schedule will also include some foreign surprises, visiting sporadically through the summer.

nosnow/noalps live @ Rookies

The alternative rock band will be performing at Rookies Bar, Bugibba from 22:00. David Zane will be the DJ in session for the night. Entrance is free.

19th Century Souvenir Illustrations of the Ggantija Temples

Exhibition of 19th century souvenirs illustrations related to the Ġgantija temples at the Citadel, Gozo Area Exhibition Hall, Victoria. Opening hours: 09:00 till 17:00 in the evening and on Saturday from 09:00 till noon.

Contemporary sound installations

The Malta Association for Contemporary Music and St James Cavalier present an exhibition of installation art and contemporary music. The installations portray the work of visual artists Ruth Bianco, Austin Camilleri and Pierre Portelli in collaboration with music composers Mariella Cassar, Albert Garcia and Reuben Pace. This project is part of the Contemporary Sounds music series: introducing contemporary music to new audiences in unexpected settings.

AUGUST 1 – SEPTEMBER 2

Preti 10x10

An exhibition of ten works by Italian artists from Calabria inspired by the works of Mattia Preti and purposely produced for this exhibition at The Heritage Malta Area Exhibition Hall, The Citadel, Victoria, Gozo. Entrance is free. Opening Hours: Mondays-Fridays: 08:00-16:00, Saturdays 08:00-12:00.

Kinemastik Short Film Festival Annual independent short film festival organised by local cinema NGO Kinemastik at Herbert Ganado Gardens, Floriana from 20:00.

Summer Grand Carnival A parade along the Buġibba Promenade, featuring Carnival Dance Groups, Carnival Floats and Grotesque Masks at Buġibba Promenade, St Paul’s Bay from 20:00.
