The amusing pitfalls of the soul

The Italian The Laboratorio di Castaldo Theatre Ensemble will be participating at the Malta Arts Festival with Katharsis, a contemporary take on the mystery play genre to be held at Auberge d’Italie, Valletta on July 2 and 3,9pm.

The Laboratorio, formed in 1996 by Domenico Castaldo serves as both a theatre school and a travelling company, and the production of Katharsis will incorporate elements of burlesque and parody within the genre of the age-old mystery play.

A preacher, Fr Jacob, is waiting to celebrate his thousandth service. Just before the arrival of the worshippers, the preacher is visited by Azrael, the angel of death, who came to take him away. The preacher however reminds Azrael that there must be a mistake. It had been agreed that Fr Jacob would be taken after and not before his thousandth service. Azrael has to wait until the service is over. The angel decides to disguise himself as a human being and join the worshippers. The bizarre thousandth service commences. It develops like a musical, during which the angel begins to feel an ineffable pull towards the lives of human beings.

In an effort to reach the widest possible audiences, entrance for the performance is free.  Tickets for the event may be collected from the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, Casa Gaspe 230, Republic Street, Valletta between 9am and 12.30pm.
