Following up on last year's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, this sequel-to-a-prequel finds our band of dwarves - led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) - moving forward in their quest to claim back their homeland after forging a precarious alliance with the Elven leader Thranduil (Lee Pace).

Meanwhile, their diminutive companion - the titular hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) - is holding on to a secret possession: the fateful 'One Ring' he had stolen in a pivotal scene from the last film.

Joined by Legolas (Orlando Bloom - familiar to Lord of the Rings fans) and fellow elven warrior Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), the dwarves forge onward into the mountaintop kingdom of Erebor, which is being held to ransom by the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

But what part will Bilbo play in their adventure? And will the help of Gandalf the Grey be enough to steer them in the right direction?

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is set for a global release around Christmastime, 2014.
