Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel died on Tuesday after suffering serious injuries in an on-field collision during a match on Monday, his club CD Tenerife confirmed.

The 30-year-old striker was playing in a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra when he collided with goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the final minutes of the game.

De Miguel was chasing the ball near the halfway line when Owono rushed out of his area to clear it, striking the striker in the chest with his knee.

The goalkeeper was immediately shown a red card and sent off. However, as he walked off the pitch, Owono rushed back towards de Miguel after realising the severity of the collision.

De Miguel initially fell to the ground clutching his chest before lying motionless on the pitch, prompting players from both teams to call for urgent medical assistance.

The match was abandoned as medical personnel treated the striker on the pitch before he was rushed to hospital.

De Miguel was initially reported to be in a stable condition despite the severity of his injuries. However, his neurological condition deteriorated overnight, and he died on Tuesday morning.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true,” CD Tenerife said in a statement announcing his death.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of the tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.”

Football clubs across Spain and beyond have paid tribute to the striker.

Real Madrid announced plans to hold a minute's silence ahead of Tuesday's training session, expressing its condolences to de Miguel's family and friends.

Barcelona also paid tribute, saying it “deeply regrets the tragic news.”

Spain's football federation also announced that all matches scheduled for Tuesday had been suspended as a mark of respect.
